Mackenzie is not seen as a shrinking violet either. Alan Noble, the founder of Northgate van hire, which Mackenzie chaired from to , remembers his robust style. He took over day-to-day running of the AA in only two months after its stock market debut, when Chris Jansen, the chief executive, made an abrupt exit of his own, swiftly followed by finance director Andy Boland.
The AA has made a habit of losing key figures unexpectedly. It has been an eventful few years for a formerly staid organisation that traded on its dependability. It was a non-profit association of drivers for 94 years until in it demutualised and was acquired by Centrica. They lashed the company together with Saga and loaded it up with debt in to create Acromas, where it sat starved of investment until Mackenzie, Clarke and Hewitt spied an opportunity to capitalise on a great British brand.

This practise was rife with vested interests and open to abuse, dishonesty and incompetence. In addition, a tradition of an annual excursion was established in , destinations subsequently taking in the English counties and cathedral cities but also venturing on to the Continent, visiting Charente in and Italy in The relatively new medium of photography was embraced and alongside the AA Sketch Book published — , a series of photograph albums were printed which served to document many historic buildings and landscapes now lost.

Up to three lorries will travel in formation, with acceleration and braking controlled by the lead vehicle.
But the head of the AA said platoons raised safety concerns. In the platoons, the lead vehicle will be controlled by a human driver and will communicate with the rest of the convoy wirelessly. The following vehicles will be instructed to accelerate and brake by the lead vehicle, allowing the lorries to drive closer together than they could with human drivers.
Lorries driving close together could reduce air resistance for the following vehicles, as the front lorry pushes air out of the way. This could lead to fuel efficiency savings for haulage companies, which Transport Minister Paul Maynard hopes will be passed on to consumers. The following vehicles could also react more quickly to the lead lorry braking than human drivers can.
However, human drivers will still steer all the lorries in the convoy. The TRL will begin trials of the technology on test tracks, but these trials are expected to move to major roads by the end of Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionDriverless lorries could lead to savings being passed to consumers, the Transport Minister Paul Maynard says The government has been promising such a project since at least Last year, for example, it announced its intention to carry out platooning trials but was later frustrated after some European lorrymakers declined to participate.
A Department for Transport spokesman told the BBC that the experiments are now expected to go ahead as the contract had been awarded.
